Can a hot tub be ECO Friendly, Energy Efficient, and Economical?

While searching for a new hot tub, you will come across many narratives regarding eco-friendliness, energy efficiency, and operational costs. With over 20 years of experience in selling hot tubs, SBS Spas has observed a wide variety of spa heating and filtration systems. We trust that the information provided below will be beneficial to you.

Hot tubs have become more environmentally friendly and energy efficient, however the specific features and systems of a hot tub can significantly influence its eco friendliness, energy consumption, and the associated annual operating costs, potentially amounting to hundreds of ££££s.

Due to rising energy expenses and environmental awareness, reputable hot tub manufacturers have incorporated heat-lock principles in the design of their products, and enhanced their hot tub insulation in all aspects to ensure heat retention.

Our hot tub ranges not only integrate heat-lock principles but also feature specialized filter/heat pumps equipped with heat recovery technology, resulting in a 30% reduction in heat energy consumption.
(We are also happy to advise on air-source heat pump systems to reduce energy costs for hot tubs.)

The water treatment system affects power and chemical use, both of which have cost and environmental impacts. Not only in terms of monthly running expenses but also in respect of the manufacture of chemicals.
For example, a hot tub equipped with a filtering system that uses the low speed of the massage pump filtering 4 to 6 hours daily, with or without ozone injectors, may incur costs that are 30% higher for power and 100% higher for chemicals. Ozone operates effectively only during the filtration period. Consequently, the water in the hot tub is usually only filtered during use and becomes stagnant after the bathers have vacated the spa.

ECO Energy Smart Pump Save EnergyECO Smart Filter Heat Pump

  • Our specified hot tubs have independently programmable ECO Smart Filter Heat pumps with heat source recovery, and filtration system with CD Ozone
  • The small pump runs independently of spa-use, filtering out any contaminants present in the water.
  • The injection of CD ozone into the water eliminates 99% of all micro-organisms. The ozone system acts immediately to purify the water, ensuring it remains clear and pristine for your next relaxing spa session.
  • The hot tub requires fewer chemicals and allows for the use of non-chlorine alternatives.
(We can recommend low-cost non-chlorine pure water treatments.)
  • They consume approximately £30 per month in electricity during the summer and around £50 per month in the winter, based on average usage.

It goes without saying that hot tubs that are designed well and built with good quality materials and components are not only more reliable but more Eco-friendly and economic, not requiring wholesale replacement of components, or repair, or even scraping.
Our hot tubs use internationally reknowned USA Balboa electronics, USA Aristech Microban Acrylic, quality components and are built to a high standard for low maintenance, as can be atested by our satisfied customers.

** Please note that these costs are calculated based on the lowest available electric tariff.

Caution

Any spa that does not feature an Eco Smart dedicated programmable filter heat pump will incur significantly higher heating and operational costs. More critically, such spas will more than likely have sporadic clean water increasing the likelihood of germs and contaminants remaining from previous users, require up to 60% additional sanitizer, and ongoing maintenance to address water clarity issues.

Hot tubs older than five years can lead to monthly electricity expenses ranging from £70 to £100 or more, and they typically depend heavily on a chemical filter system, which can add another £200 annually. Additionally, maintaining proper water balance becomes increasingly challenging. We invite you to visit our showroom to observe the Eco Smart filter and heat recovery system in action, which will clearly demonstrate the advantages our spas offer over traditional hot tubs.
